“Little by little”

Most of us suffer from impatience. You’ve heard it said many times, “Don’t pray for patience, because God has unique ways of teaching it to you.” Still, we want a job done quickly, the trip to end, the problem to be settled, the prayer answered immediately, and the pain to go away.

 

Life at it’s best can be frustrating. Have you ever become frustrated in your walk with God? Are there times you wish you were further along in Christian journey than you are right now? Wondered why you can’t get over some habits that continue to make you stumble?

 

Living a life for Christ is a process. Your behaviors today didn’t develop overnight. Good, bad, or indifferent, they too were developed over time. There’s a great quote you may be familiar with, “God got the Israelites out of Egypt in one day, but it took 40 years to get Egypt out of the Israelites.”

 

In Exodus 23 God is teaching the Israelites about Justice and Mercy, the Sabbath Laws, and the Three Annual Festivals. In verse 20, He informs them that he’s sending an angel ahead of them as they travel to the Promised Land. They are to follow this angel and do everything he says. Many powerful enemies will be encountered on their way, but in God’s infinite wisdom he says, “I will not drive out three such enemies in a single year, because the the land would become desolate and the wild animals to numerous for you. ‘Little by little’ I will drive them out before you, until you have increased enough to take possession of the land.”

 

We are always told, take one step at a time, live one moment at a time, and my favorite, “Rome wasn’t built in a day!” Growing physically, mentally, emotionally, and relationally is a process. So is your spiritual life. God hasn’t called us to perfection; He calls us to be obedient. Praying, reading the Bible, and meditating upon the things of God, day after day after day will lead to holiness. It’s not “IF,” but “WHEN,” you slip up, repent and continue your journey.

Faith develops little by little, but the roots grow deep and a foundation in Christ becomes strong. Don’t rush – enjoy the Christian journey.

"Seeing is Believing" - Thursday July 23, 2026

“Seeing is Believing”

Have you known anyone who always said, “If you ever need anything call me?” But when called upon, for one reason or another they were never able to give assistance. If their good intentions were followed by consistent “no shows,” you probably gave up on them regarding a person that could be counted on.

 

The mental view of a person that can’t be depended on is one with little expectation. Yesterday’s devotional was titled, “Everything Changes – Except…” God! The presence, love, power, faithfulness, and promises of God are still intact. They are as reliable and consistent today as the day they were made.  But their validity is only as strong as your belief that each of these characteristics is true. Does your belief match your view of God?

 

If I inquired about the person mentioned above if they could be counted on, you most likely would not give a strong recommendation. Why? Because they illustrated unreliability and consequently you developed a mindset of this shortcoming. They may be a good person, just not one to be counted on. You’ve developed a mental view of them.

 

Psalm 34:17 says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.”  Troubles can either drive us away from God or draw us near God. Our response does not depend on the kind of trouble, rather, our response depends on our view of God. We can view Him either as the source of our trouble or problem solver.

 

If God is viewed as the source of trouble and heartbreak, we will likely be resentful and self-pitying. But if viewed as the One who can help us in any situation, we will be drawn to Him knowing that He is drawing near to us (James 4:8).  Moses said, “I have seen Him who is invisible.” He developed a view of a God who could do anything.

 

If you are in need, let the view you have of God draw you closer to Him rather than away. May your mental picture see God as loving, kind, and ready to help in any kind of trouble (Psalm 46:1). Seeing is believing!

"Everything Changes - Except..." - Wednesday July 22, 2026

“Everything Changes – Except…”

It’s always interesting to hear an elderly person and share the changes they have experienced and seen as the years have passed by. We live in a day of rapid change. You have stories to share on things you’ve seen change. Our world, society, and culture are changing. You and I are changing. We’ve all witnessed changes. Sometimes we forget there is One who never has or will change. Here’s a short list of THINGS THAT HAVE NOT CHANGED with God.

• The LOVE of God – “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever” (Psalm 118:1).
• The POWER of God – “Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son” (Genesis 18:14). “Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arms. NOTHING is too hard for you” (Jeremiah 32:17).
• The PRESENCE of God – “No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I WILL NEVER LEAVE OR FORSAKE YOU” (Joshua 1:5).

 

• The PROMISES of God – “God did this so that by two interchangeable things (promises and oath) in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged” (Hebrews 6:18).

 

• The FAITHFULNESS of God - “For great is his love toward us, and the FAITHFULNESS of the Lord endures forever” (Psalm 117:2).

 

Faith isn’t a part of the Christian life, faith IS the Christian life – “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him MUST BELIEVE that he exists and he rewards those who seek him” (Hebrews 11:6).

 

It’s important to remember, power isn’t in your faith, it’s in the OBJECT OF YOUR FAITH. Too often we put our trust in people, institutions, the people in Washington DC, and many things. Every person and thing you may consider putting you trust in, has the possibility of failing. Yet, “With God ALL things are possible and He NEVER changes or fails.

"Personal Integrity" - Tuesday July 21, 2026

“Personal Integrity”

Integrity is a goal achieved by choice and determination. It’s the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Integrity is the quality of not only being honest and trustworthy, but living a consistent, uncompromising adherence to strong moral and ethical principles. A testimony for Christ is a life lived with integrity.

 

The Bible provides us verses to live by that guide us toward a life of integrity. I John 2:15 says, “Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Matthew 5:13-16 provides the familiar information that the follower of Christ should be “salt” and “light” in this world.

 

Most people I know and hang around with are individuals who want to make difference in this world. In order to do that, we live a life that might inspire or encourage another. This is living with intentionality. As Jesus was talking about Salt and Light, we can summarize the believer’s function into one word. “INFLUENCE!”.

 

Considering the teachings of Jesus, it appears His focus was on “being” before “doing”. The New Testament, gives a number of symbols for the kingdom of God. Jesus says it is like salt, like light, like water, like leaven, and like a key.

 

What do these five things have in common? One thing: penetration. Salt penetrates meat to preserve it. Light penetrates darkness to dispel and illumine it. Water penetrates the soil to refresh it. Leaven penetrates dough to help it rise, and a key penetrates a lock to open it.

 

As Christ followers, we are not to let the world get into us. But God has placed us in the world for one very clear reason, and that is in order to penetrate our society with the good news of the gospel. In your journey with Jesus, He will allow your path to cross the paths of many others. May God help us to lean on the power of the Holy Spirit to live a life of integrity. Doing so will influence our loved ones, friends, work associates, and new acquaintances. Let’s determine to make of daily practice of doing our best to make a difference in the lives of others.

"Obedience Leads to Trust" - Monday July 20, 2026

“Obedience Leads to Trust”

Sometimes when reading scripture, there’s a tendency to skip over hard-to-understand passages or genealogies that are difficult to follow. As we progress on our journey of following Christ, hopefully we learn sooner rather than later that the one thing God always honors is obedience.

 

The Lord may speak to us with a gentle whisper, or a certain Bible verse, or through the influence of the Holy Spirit. God is always present guiding and protecting any child of His that is willing to listen. He is faithful to us and is always willing to help us, especially in times of need (Psalm 46:1-2). Day by day of allowing Him to guide our steps, is training ground for building a faith that is strong and unshakeable when trials come.

 

I Corinthians 5:19-20 may not be a passage that grabs our attention but is one explaining my point in this blog. “They waged war against the Hagrites…. They were helped in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because They cried out to him during battle. HE ANSWERED THEIR PRAYERS, BECAUSE THEY TRUSTED HIM.”

 

NOTE: They cried out – He heard their prayer and answered them. Israel won the battle, not because of their size or strength, but because of two critical weapons they possessed – prayer and faith. Every time God answers one of our prayers, the foundation of our faith goes deeper and becomes stronger. When life’s battles become greater and more intense, as a believer, we know the formula for victory. What we’ve learned in the past become our stepping stones into the future.

 

God answered Israel’s prayer in battle because they “TRUSTED HIM.” What opposition are you facing today that is overwhelming? What occupies your mind during the day and keeps you awake at night? Your spirits may be low as you face a relationship or medical problem. You may feel alone, discouraged, and afraid, but God is with you.

 

Cry out to Him using whatever amount of faith you have. He is aware of your battle and will hear you when you cry out to Him. As you call out allow God to help you put your full trust in Him.

"I Know Better" - Friday - July 17, 2026

“I Know Better”

How many times have you said or thought, “I shouldn’t be here,” or “I shouldn’t be doing this?” We are all vulnerable in certain situations. It isn’t a sin to be tempted, but the temptation becomes sin when it’s yielded to. There are two primary voices in the world, the voice of righteousness (God) and the voice of evil (Satan).

 

The voice of evil says doing something once that we know is wrong won’t hurt us. We know this to be true, but some take it seriously, bad habits, or starting down a wrong path begins with a “first time,” even when thinking just once.

 

Another false narrative is believing the convincing lie, “I’m only hurting myself!” You’ve heard this many times, “Sin always takes you deeper than you want go, it keeps you longer than you want to stay, and it ALWAYS costs more than you want to pay!” Two voices – the voice of God or Satan. Who are you listening to?

 

In I Corinthians 10:13. Paul warned the Corinthians about the danger of yielding to temptation. The desert was littered with the bodies of Israelites who ignored God’s warnings (I Corinthians 10:5). On their journey to the Promised land, the Hebrews engaged in immorality, idolatry, and grumbling. Many were judged. These examples from Israel’s past “were written for our admonition” – as warnings about the dangers of temptation (I Corinthians 10:11). “Let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall,”(vs 12).

 

Satan is evil. He’s a deceiver, liar, and desires nothing more than to destroy your reputation, character, family, and in doing so, destroys your life. However, if you’ll listen you’ll hear the voice of God telling you, “No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation WILL ALSO MAKE A WAY OF ESCAPE, that you may be able to bear it” (I Corinthians 10:13).

 

God will help you discern between good and evil. It’s your choice who you listen to and follow. He also gives a plan and avenue of escape when tempted. “Resist the devil and he will flee from you!” (James 4:7).

"If Only" vs "What If" - Thursday July 16, 2026

“If Only” vs “What If”

Mahatma Gandhi said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” If the word “IF” isn’t the biggest word in the Bible, it certainly ranks near the top. It’s quite amazing how a simple two letter word defines most people today. That simple word is mentioned in Romans 8, ten times.

 

Some people are where they are today because they can’t let go of or forget the “If Only” regrets of their past. We know the story well. “If only” I hadn’t gone there, done that, married that person, hung out with that person, lost my job, or completed my education, my life would be different today. Listen, “We ALL have sinned,” (Romans 3:23).

 

God is a master at taking broken and disappointed lives and restoring them in a way that they are far better than ever were before. There’s no sin He can’t or won’t forgive. There’s no problem He can’t solve. There’s no relationship He can’t restore and reconcile.

 

WHAT IF, you came before God, One who loves you more than anyone else in this world. A God who already knows the shortcomings of your past, all your sins, bad habits, the lies, and deceptions you tried to get away with, and other unimaginable and said, - “God, I give up! I’m waving the white flag and surrendering my life to you. Please forgive me of everything I’ve done wrong. I need You in my life and want to become the person You intended me to be!”

 

When a person confesses and forsakes their sins, the regrets of the past may linger for a while, but a loving and merciful God will go to work immediately. Not only forgiving the sins but restoring your life. He begins to renew the mind giving proper thoughts. A mindset begins to develop that draws us closer to Him.

 

“WHAT IF,” you began to see yourself and others as Jesus does? “What if” you started believing God only has good ideas and YOU are an idea in the mind of God? “What if” you started believing there’s nothing God can’t do and His promises are true?  Today you can trade your “If only,” (even if you’ve tried it before), for “What If” possibilities.

"When Life Gets Rocky" - Wednesday July 15, 2026

“When Life Gets Rocky”

There will be times when every life is rocked by a storm. Sometimes we are blindsided as we didn’t see any reasons to believe a storm was about to hit. Then there are occasions we expect a storm to rock our life at some point because of the bad choices we made or those of a loved one. Lives are often turned upside down because of these choices, a betrayal, abuse, marital difficulty, declining health, and/or financial issues.

 

When trials come, lots of different thoughts and emotions rise to the surface. An adversity may be so severe that we don’t know what to say or do. We wonder if it will ever end. It’s easy to blame someone else for our situation. People facing setbacks often become lonely, discouraged, and afraid. Perhaps you are experiencing such a storm.

 

Thankfully, we have an anchor that holds us steady during even the worst of times. That anchor is Jesus and the connecting lifeline is the Word of God. I challenge you to find a quiet place and read Psalm 107. As you study these verses, you’ll discover many different scenarios people faced in the wilderness or on a stormy sea. If you’re in the midst of a tough situation, this passage of scripture will help you. I’ll provide a simple outline for you to follow.

 

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.” GOD IS GOOD in every situation because he’s a GOOD GOD! As you read the verses, you’ll discover some individuals got lost wandering into desert wastelands. Prisoners were chained and sitting in darkness. Like the ones lost in the desert, they cried out to God, He heard and delivered them.

 

In verses 17-22 we discover patients who were healed from their suffering. Verses 23-32 inform us of sailors sinking at sea, and verses 33-38 about dry deserts becoming well-watered. The devil whispers saying things will never change, but God has a different word: He knows exactly where you are and your situation. He’s your rescuer, he can calm the waves. There’s a proper conclusion to every storm. What you see in the immediate is not all God sees in your future. The way out is allowing Him to take you through the storm. If you cry out to Him, he’ll hear you.

"Perseverance" - Tuesday July 14, 2026

“Perseverance”:

Developing a life of “Self-Discipline” requires work (see yesterday’s devotional). The Bible tells us, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord” (Psalm 37:23). We also know that “Self-control” is listed among the “Fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22-23). Willpower provides us the mental energy required to pursue our goals and dreams, but fulfilling them requires strong desire, effort, and sacrifice.

 

It’s never to late to dream big dreams. Your desire may be to do your best to repair a broken relationship, save money, complete your education, prepare yourself for a career, or any number of other things. Some of you may be struggling in your spiritual life and are being tempted to give in believing you can never become what God wants you to be. Just know, that’s the devil playing with your mind and he’s a liar!! God said, “You are more than a conqueror”  (Romans 8:37).

 

God is still God and if you have a relationship with Him, you are one of his children. He loves you with an everlasting love and the plans He has for your life are still in place. You may have gotten off track but today can be a new beginning. Ask for His help, seek his guidance, and get started again. Last week some powerful saints in the Bible were mentioned as “Imperfect.” They messed up, but God used them. We all mess up, but God is kind, patient, and like everyone else, gives us another chance to get our life back into His hands.

 

This can only happen IF you want it to happen. God is more than willing, but there comes a point when we must surrender our will for HIS WILL. Desire, determination, and effort will be necessary. Every devoted follower of Christ has had to make this commitment. You are either following Jesus or Satan. Every day you make a choice.

 

A decision has to be made, and no one can do it for you. Following Jesus is personal. It takes daily discipline and PERSEVERANCE! Perseverance is the continued steadfast effort to achieve a goal or to complete a task desoite facing difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement. Perseverance is generating the strength to get up and continue after we’ve fallen or make a mistake. Satan is your enemy! Don’t let him deprive you of the joy and peace God has for you!

"Self-Discipline is Work" - Monday July 13, 2026

“Self-Discipline is Work”

Show up early to work – work hard – stay out of trouble – go on a diet – do the right thing – exercise – choose good friends and respect those in authority! Wow – that’s quite a list. Many other things could be added such as get over your anger, jealousy, and bad habits.

 

Here’s what I know, “Self-Discipline” requires work!! I once heard a statement a college football coach gave his team.  He told his players, “There are two things only you can control – desire and effort!” So, the question is how much do you want to do something and how hard are you willing to work for it?

 

Most of us have little patience. Discouragement comes when accomplishing something doesn’t come easily. Everyone has the ability to make themselves a disciplined person, but it’s a matter of desire and effort. Self-discipline in short is the ability to control your impulses, emotions, and behavior to achieve long-term goals. It’s consistently choosing to do what you should do, rather than what you feel like doing.

 

Willpower is the mental energy required to resist immediate temptations and distractions. Consistency is taking action on a regular basis, regardless of fleeting physical or emotional states. Long term focus is sacrificing short term gratification that pulls you away from your goals. Procrastination is a very common detour from accomplishments.

 

Why is “Self-discipline” so important? Because developing a disciplined life gets rid of the need to be motivated. Disciplining yourself teaches you how be accountable, responsible, and pushes you toward achieving your goal(s). The Bible addresses self-discipline and self-control directly, framing it as a fruit of the Holy Spirit and vital for growth. It requires actively setting boundaries, guarding your heart, and relying on God’s strength to live intentionally.

 

Is there an area of your life that’s out of control? You know the necessary steps needed to bring it under control. It’s a matter of true desire and genuine effort. Proverbs says, “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control” (25:28).

"Imperfect Saints" Pt 5 of 5 - Friday July 10, 2026

“Imperfect Saints” Pt 5 of 5:

Every person has some flaws and shortcomings. Be careful how you label yours because often what we call bad habits; God calls them sin. Time was spent on Abraham’s lies this week … for two reasons. One, a  respected and admired man in the Old Testament was chosen by God to be a prophet. Chosen, but he wasn’t perfect. Like so many, Abraham was deceived by Satan thinking rationalizing his lying would protect him and his wife Sarah.

 

The second reason is to remind everyone, lying is a destructive sin told generally as a coverup for a previous sin. Lies hurt and divide families and other relationships. It creates mistrust and if not surrendered to God could and will destroy our character. In Genesis 20, God used a pagan king, Abimelech, to expose Abrahams’ sin.

 

Once Abraham confessed his sin, the king showed him grace and showered the prophet with gifts (20:14-18). God used Abimelech to show that He does not disown his children when they sin, just as loving parents do not disown their children when they do wrong. But it’s important to see, God did not ignore Abraham’s sin. Nor will He ours.

 

It’s comforting to know that Abraham’s failure did not change his standing before God. The Lord called him a “prophet,” which means spokesperson for God. Abraham is mentioned in Hebrews 11:8-19. This chapter is known as the “Hall of Faith.” A long list of people who honored and served God are listed in this chapter. As you read it, you’ll discover Abraham’s sin is not mentioned. There’s only praise for his many demonstrations of faith.

 

The chapter closes with Abraham praying for Abimelech and verses 17-18 illustrate God’s love and grace for both of these men. Abraham was forgiven of his sins and became a spiritual giant in the Old Testament. The Lord also healed Abimelech’s wife and daughters so they could have children because the Lord had closed the womb in Abimelech’s household because of Abraham’s wife, Sarah.

 

In closing, let’s remember God had a plan for Abraham life and didn’t give up on him even though he strayed. God has a plan for your life too. Maybe you aren’t as close to God as you should be. Many people lie about being a Christian. God’s love never fails and He’ll never give up on you. Like Abraham, Moses, David, Paul, Peter, and others who failed, He stands with His arms wide open ready to receive you back into the fold. He’ll never give up on you.

"Imperfect Saints" Pt 4 of 5 - Thursday July 9, 2026

“Imperfect Saints” Pt 4 of 5:

Lots of attention has been placed upon Abraham’s lie to King Abimelech about Sarah being his sister, not his wife (Genesis 20). Lying is what people do to cover up a wrong they have committed or to make something look better than it actually is.

 

Abraham’s sin was caused by his lack of faith plus thinking he could get away with it. Isn’t that why people lie in the first place? They believe no one will ever find out, but in most cases, the truth always comes out. Not only is this embarrassing to the liar, but ,creates feelings of distrust with loved ones and close friends. A person truly puts themself in a very bad place when others can’t believe they are speaking the truth.

 

Abraham and Saran had made an agreement to lie about their relationship at the beginning of their journey (Gen. 12). Maybe we give them a pass on the first one as they were young in their faith, but 30 years had passed since then and now before the king, Abraham decides to compromise and do something he was wrong.

 

We may wonder, what was wrong with Abraham and why would he do such a horrible thing? Abraham’s problem was the same problem you and I have when we don’t fully repent of our sins – especially the sin we are most vulnerable to. It isn’t enough to be sorry for sin; we must confess it and repent. Repentance is forsaking it – asking God to help you never to do it again. Proverbs says, “He who conceals his sins will not prosper but whoever confesses will find mercy” (28:13).

 

It was mentioned earlier this week that this pagan king (Abimelech) illustrated greater integrity than Abraham, but God’s servant comes clean when confronted by the king. Abimelech returned Sarah to her husband and showed no hard feelings. He actually honored the prophet and showered Abraham with gifts (Gen. 20:14). Then said the king, “My land is before you, live wherever you wish.”

 

Abraham was “justified” in the eyes of the king. He was cleared of his wrong doing, meaning forgiveness had taken place. The gifts given by the king was evidence to everyone that a wrong had been righted. When a person truly repents of their sins, God goes to work restoring broken relationships, healing broken hearts, and creating a new way of life. When a person makes his wrongs – right – the blessings (gifts) of God begin to come.

"Imperfect Saints" Pt 3 of 5 - Wednesday July 8, 2026

“Imperfect Saints” Pt 3 of 5:

Reference was given to Hebrews 12:1 yesterday which states in part, “throw off everything that hinders (plural) and the sin (singular) that so easily entangles…”. I believe the verse is teaching us that a person committing a sin, is usually committing more than one. My take is the major follow up to a committed sin is lying about it. Liars tell lies to protect themselves, maybe as an excuse in an attempt not to hurt a loved one. But as mentioned, without repentance and stoppage of it, the sin (sins) will eventually be exposed (Numbers 32:23).

 

When sin is exposed, God will not shield us from the embarrassment of its exposure. As we read in Genesis 20, King Abimelech became irate and demanded an explanation as to why Abraham lied to him saying Sarah was his sister and not his wife. Abraham’s excuse is as embarrassing as his actions. He first said, “Because there’s no fear of God in this place and they will kill me in order to have my wife” (20:11).

 

What this prophet didn’t know was that he was making this statement to a king so over-whelmed with the fear of God that he could hardly sit on his throne. The king had an honorable sense of right and wrong and to make things worse, the pagan king illustrated a greater integrity than the man of God.

 

Let’s face it – lies are used as a coverup. The biggest lie is Satan convincing a person to claim innocence in order to survive a marriage, relationship, friendship, job, or crime. Remember, LYING IS ON GOD’S MOST HATED LIST (read Proverbs 6:16-19).

 

If you take the time to look up that passage, you’ll find another “hated” sin is pride. Proverbs 16:18 informs us, “Pride goes before destruction.” This explains what happens when we pridefully decide a sinful way is better than God’s way. As we continue our reading in Genesis 20, we find the second part of Abraham’s explanation of lying to the king is no more flattering than the first.  In verse 12 we read, “Besides – she really is my sister, the daughter of my father, but not my mother.”

 

Abraham heard Satan’s voice over God’s. In verse 13 we discover Sarah was convinced to go along with this lie. The point is, rarely (if ever) does anyone sin alone.

"Imperfect Saints" Pt 2 of 5 - Tuesday July 7, 2026

“Imperfect Saints” Pt 2 of 5:

Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great crowd of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Note, “hinders” is plural indicating there could be many things that slow or weight us down from becoming the person God wants us to be. But the word “sin,” is singular indicating that for many people, there is a vulnerable sin and when Satan sets the trap we take the bait and fall prey.

 

Abraham wasn’t perfect by any means, but it appears his vulnerability was lying. It’s easy for us to side with his lies because he thought the king would kill him and take his wife (Gen. 12:12-13; 20:1-2). To protect himself, he said Sarah was his sister.  Abraham’s lack of faith in God’s protection is disappointing. Yet aren’t most lies given with the intent of protecting the person that says them (or someone else)?

 

The Bible is filled with Godly characters, both male and female. We read their stories and often wish our spiritual lives could be as strong as theirs. The thing is that they were flawed just like you and me. While flawed, we must grasp the fact that the Bible proclaims the holiness of the Lord, NOT the perfection of his followers. Faith DOES NOT make us perfect – it makes us obedient!  Faithful obedience to God and His Word builds Christian character.

 

King Abimelech did in fact take Sarah, but in a dream, God told him he was as good as dead because she was a married woman (Gen. 20:3-7). Abimelech was a man of integrity and when God spoke to him, he responded with reverence (v 4). He then proclaimed his innocence (v 5) and he was innocent. He had been drawn into this situation because of Abraham’s deceit.

 

God acknowledged the king’s innocence but gave him an order followed with a warning, “Return the man’s wife for he is a prophet and will pray for you. Do this and you’ll live – if not, you and yours will die” (vs 6-7). Can you imagine how embarrassed Abraham must have felt when his sin was publicly exposed (vs 8-9)? The Bible gives each of us this warning, “ Be sure, your sin will find you out” (Numbers 32:23). If we continue to live a life of sin, it’s only a matter of time until those sins will be exposed. When that happens, loved ones and friends are always hurt by the fall out!

"Imperfect Saints" Pt 1 of 5 - Monday July 6, 2026

“Imperfect Saints” Pt 1 of 5:

This week our focus will be on encouraging those desiring to be strong Christians but find themselves returning to bad habits and listening to Satan’s lies that they can never become the person God wants them to be. You’ve heard it said, “No one’s perfect!” Well, that’s almost true, but actually Adam and Eve were created perfect and were placed in a perfect environment. Their failure came when they paid more attention to Satan’s voice than God’s (Genesis 3). Since then, you’re right – no one is perfect, but God has called us to be holy (Leviticus 11:44, 19:2, 20:7, and I Peter 1:16).

 

However, there is one perfect individual, Jesus, and even He was tempted (Luke 4:1-13). Imperfection means flawed, incomplete, not entirely correct,  damaged, or failure. Have you ever felt that way? Me too! The thing about the Bible is it doesn’t hide the flaws or sins of its key characters. Abraham had a problem, Moses couldn’t control his anger, everyone knows about sins of David, and Peter denying Christ. Even Paul and Barnabas had issues.

 

There’s many imperfect biblical characters to choose from, but let’s follow Abraham for a few days. His life brings wonderful news for those times when we get down on ourselves because we are guilty of sin. Especially an “old” sin we thought we’d overcome. Here’s our first lesson of the week: “Conversion is instantaneous and is completed the moment we repent of our sins and trust Jesus for salvation!”

 

However, spiritual growth is gradual. Someone said, “It took one day for God to get Israel our of Egypt, but it took 40 years to get Egypt out of Israel.” If you get discouraged because you aren’t a perfect saint, this weeks’ lessons are for you. Abraham had a bad habit. In fact, his problem showed up even in his later years. You’ll find evidence of what I’m writing about in Genesis 12, 20 and 21.

 

After the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18-19), Abraham moved to the South and stayed in a place called Shur. A powerful king (Abimelech) lived there, and Abraham feared for his life. Because Sarah was beautiful, he thought the king would kill him in order to take Sarah for himself. This situation caused Abraham to repeat the same sin he committed in Egypt (Gen. 12:12-13), by saying Sarah was his sister – not his wife. As with all sins, this created a domino effect.

"HAPPY 250th AMERICA!" - Friday July 3, 2026

“HAPPY 250^th AMERICA”

You don’t have to be a soccer (foot-ball or fut-bol) fan to sense the excitement going on in the USA, Mexico, and Canada as these countries co-host over 1,200 players from 48 counties competing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The United States team plays next Monday night. Take a look if you can, even if only for a few minutes.

 

Games have been going on for a couple weeks and without (as far as I know) political interference and WITHOUT VIOLENCE. It’s also been reported that in host cities, evangelistic teams are sharing the Gospel with people who are hearing about Jesus and a God that loves them for the first time in their lives. Could this lead to “World-wide Revival?” Whether interested in these games or not, we all can pray God will show in ways people have never seen before.

 

The Japanese fans have a rule of conduct. They clean up their occupied area in the stadium following a game. That’s their custom. A good friend of mine just returned from a visit to Japan saying it was the cleanest place she has ever been. Trash cans were nowhere in sight as people always clean up after themselves. Can we learn something here?

 

Thursday, I received a post from “Right-Newswire” with comments from visiting international fans stating what a beautiful place America is. They bragged on the American hospitality, acceptance, food and one stated, “This isn’t how our news people describe America back home.” We should be proud to be an American! For 250 years this Saturday, brave men and women have fought for our freedom with many giving the ultimate sacrifice.

 

It’s hard to have pride and interest in something you don’t invest in. We should be grateful for those who have invested their lives in the United States of America. We have opportunity every day to stand faithfully for the Red, White, and Blue! It’s exciting to see so many American flags surrounding public places and hanging in private yards or on homes. We must remember that generations are coming behind us. Let’s invest time, character, integrity, teach the difference between good and evil, and turn our hearts toward the One who blesses us. Lord, THANK YOU for our great Nation and Happy 250th Birthday AMERICA! May we as citizens learn how blessed we are and pass that legacy to the generations coming behind us.

"If You Were God" - Thursday July 2, 2026

“If You Were God”

If you were God, what would you do to settle the hatred and animosity that fills our world today? How would you handle the medical situations so many people deal with on a daily basis? The reason I ask is because so often we tend to think we know better than most other people. A stadium can be filled with over 90,000 football fans and when the referee makes a call against the home team, the vast majority claim he’s blind and he made a mistake.

 

How many times have you thought (or said), “The people running this company don’t know what they’re doing!” The point is, as long as we do not have to make the heavy decisions, we believe we know exactly what the right call is and the right action to take. It’s quite amazing how our thinking changes when major decisions fall upon our shoulders.

 

So, what does this have to do with God? Let me try to draw a parallel. Have you ever become discouraged when the answer to your prayers were delayed? What about getting upset when something you wanted or needed became impossible because He closed the door on that opportunity?  Have you ever wondered, “Why Me?”

 

Before going any further, I’m throwing in a disclaimer, because like you, rarely do I know what God’s up too. The truth is, I’m not sure He wants us to know completely because He wants us to trust Him. We know this, but it bears repeating. God’s a whole lot smarter than we are. He not only created the universe and put the stars, sun, and moon in place, but created them in such a way that they would stay in place. Then for fun, He named each one of them.

 

We’re a pretty spoiled lot, don’t you think? We want what we want – NOW!  Commitment and sacrifice are hard work. Too many times we look for the easy road to walk, but Jesus said, “Pick up your cross and follow Me daily!” When God is truly in control, I’ve likened it to hopping on the back of a motorcycle with Him in front, handles in hand. At that point, we are His mercy. He may take us to places that are spectacular, amazing, and beautiful! But there will also be trips through the valley. We get nervous, anxious, and frightened. We don’t understand and hate the experience, but here’s the consolation, WE ARE WITH JESUS BECAUSE HE IS AT THE CONTROLS and knows what’s best for us!!

"Praying for Peace" - Wednesday July 1, 2026

“Praying for Peace”

Jesus said, “My peace I leave with you.” What did he mean and how could that make a difference in your life today? As you look around, you’ll notice lots and lots of things, but genuine peace isn’t one of them. People are worried about a variety of things.

 

It’s very sad, surveys reveal most high school students are afraid of attacks within their school. Of course, many fear the future because this present day isn’t very promising. Did Jesus really mean what He said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do let your heart be troubled and DO NOT BE AFRAID.” So, what do we do when we’re overcome by things we can’t control?

 

At one time or another, we have all experienced fear, anxiety, and worry. For some, it’s a condition that’s serious and requires professional help. But for many of us, it’s a condition of the heart and one that God talks about frequently in the scriptures. God wants to provide His unchanging peace to every one of us who struggles. Philippians 4:6-7 teaches us 4 kinds of prayer that will usher God’s peace into our lives.

 

“Do not be anxious about anything but in EVERY situation, by PRAYER and PETITION, with THANKSGIVING, present your REQUESTS to God. And the peace of God which TRANSCENDS ALL UNDERSTANDING, will GUARD your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” The writer first commands us to not worry or about anything. Easier said than done, right? It will take CONSCIOUS EFFORT and practice not to worry!

 

Paul teaches us to take the things making us anxious and put them into God’s hands. That’s first (Prayer). It will be helpful to develop a ritual of when you first get up in the morning (before looking at your phone or anything else) to turn your thoughts upon God. Quote a Bible verse from memory or read a short passage from your Bible. Focus your mind upon the Lord before thinking about anything else. A prayer of PETITION is recognizing your desperate need for God. Tell God you can’t handle this situation and it’s hard not to worry about it. This is our way of acknowledging that we can’t provide for ourselves and that He is the One in control.

 

Thirdly, take that which you are struggling with to God with THANKSGIVING. Thank Him for the times past when you were in need and He answered your prayers. Give Him praise acknowledging and believing the solution to the problem is in His hands. And lastly, make your REQUESTS known to Him. Be specific – if it’s a health crisis, ask for His help in securing the right doctor. Whatever the need, spell it out and here’s why. When we don’t pray specifically, we can’t say for certain if God answered this prayer or another one. PRAY for PEACE, pray SPECIFICALLY, and EXPECTANTLY.

"A Daily Decision" - Tuesday June 30, 2026

“A Daily Decision”

Sometimes making a personal commitment to Christ seems overwhelming. Where it truly is and should be a lifelong commitment, it basically is living one moment, one decision, and one day at a time. It’s long obedience in the same direction. If you are one that’s seeking God (wanting to find out more about Him) or a new believer, beware because you will be getting mixed messages. One is the Holy Spirit attempting to convince you this is a life transforming decision when your life is surrendered to Jesus, and there’s another voice saying, “You’ll never be able to live a Christian life!”

 

This is when you get alone, shut off your phone and close off all the outside noise and in your own words talk to God. You may or may not know many scripture verses, but if you’ve sensed a tug toward spiritual things in recent days, I can promise you, that’s not Satan – IT’S THE LORD!

 

The voice of God is the Holy Spirit who speaks to you through the Bible, your conscience, Christian friends, situations. circumstances, victories, defeats, illness, and even in times of loss. Satan condemns and pushes you down filling your brain with negative thoughts. The devils’ goal is to defeat and eventually destroy you, but God sent His Son Jesus to the Cross to save and rescue you.

 

Satan says you’re a loser – Jesus says you are victorious! The evil one says you’re worthless, but God says you have purpose. Satan wants to hold you captive and chained in bondage, but Jesus has come to set you free. Satan tries to convince you that you’re weak and will never be able to live for Christ, but the Apostle Paul teaches us, “I (you can do all things THROUGH CHRIST WHO STRENGTHENS ME (YOU)” (Philippians 4:13).

 

Each day the Lord reminds us of two distinguishing facts in John 10:10, “The thief (Satan) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; BUT I have come that they (you) may have life and have it to the full (a life of purpose and meaning).”  Every day you have a choice – will you put your life in God’s hands and walk with Him, or allow the evil to influence your thoughts which directs your behavior? Remember, you are never alone when you’re walking with God!

"A Deep Settled Peace" - Monday June 29, 2026

“A Deep Settled Peace”

My wife taught me many years ago and reminds me of this fact whenever she thinks I need it, “God doesn’t make sense!” It took a minute, but finally I realized God either does or allows things that seem strange to us at the time, but in the end, He has a purpose. The Bible says, “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord” (Psalm 37:23).

 

This past Sunday I began a short series of teaching on, “Why a Loving God Allows Suffering,” which is livestreamed on “You Tube” if this interests you. Class begins at 10:00am (EST). We just started, so you can catch up quickly.

 

We all agree there are lots of problems in our world. Tension between groups of people is high and growing. There’s hatred and violence in our streets, sickness, broken relationships, seasons of loss that break our hearts, and financial struggles that keep us awake at night.

 

Often you’re reminded of the words of Jesus in John 16:33, “I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” In moments of suffering or a relational conflict, sometimes it’s difficult to just get through the day. When you feel weighted down, it’s easy to feel isolated, or wonder if you’ve done something wrong.

 

When we begin to question God, we often question ourselves wondering what we have done wrong. If God is so loving and kind with the ability to heal, where is He? The “Why me?” question rolls around in our head along with, “How long will this last?” There are times we must conclude some things may never be answered this side of heaven. Let me add, if you’re in a really tough situation doesn’t mean it’s a sign of spiritual failure. (If it is, you’ll know it).

 

Personal problems are a part of the human experience that Jesus Himself assured us we would face. But the beauty of the gospel is not found in the absence of trouble, it’s found in the “PRESENCE of PEACE” amidst the trouble (Philippians 4:7). John 16:33 offered the disciples (and us) a lifeline. He acknowledged the inevitable pain of the world so that we would know where to look when it arrives. Our hope is not anchored in a life free from difficulty, but in a Savior who has already conquered anything and everything that threaten to defeat us. Because Jesus has overcome the world, we can face our hardships with confidence. Bring your brokenness to the One who loves you most and lean into His embrace.
