"Stop Sinning" Pt 2 - Tuesday July 29, 2025

“Stop Sinning” Pt 2:

Before his crucifixion, Jesus warned his disciples they would face difficulties and challenges. As followers of Christ, we should expect continuing tension with an unbelieving world that is “out of sync” with Christ, his gospel, and his people. The warning was, “I have told you these things, so that IN ME you my have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

When we read the New Testament and how religious leaders first opposed Jesus because of petty jealousy, then developed into a fierce hatred, it’s difficult to imagine. That is until today. There was a time when we discussed right versus wrong. Now, many have gone so far that they actually believe there is no such thing as right or wrong! Our battle isn’t right vs wrong, but “good vs evil.”

We all know people who’ve said, “I tried church, but it wasn’t for me.” Others stated, “I tried the Jesus thing, but I can’t live that way.” Or “My life is so messed up, I can never turn it around!” It’s unfortunate some individuals are where they are today because of abuse from others and have no self-esteem or self-worth. They’ve been beaten down mentally, emotionally, and in some cases physically. Most individuals however are far from God today, not because they are victims, but willing participants in living a life of sin. They have chosen to serve themselves rather than God and others. Thankfully, there is a way out should anyone have a desire to allow Christ to forgive them of all their sins and transform their life. Jesus said, “You will have trouble in the world, BUT I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD!” He also, “Loves us with an everlasting love” (Psalm 117:2).

Temptation comes to everyone, even to Christ’s faithful followers. But I Corinthians 10:13 promises the Lord will provide an escape in every situation. When confronted with good behavior vs evil behavior, we make a choice. Will we follow Jesus or Satan? The Apostle Paul is a great example of one who was changed from a “Jesus’ hater” to an avid follower of Christ. He provides us with instructions how to take a stand against the devil’s schemes. “Our struggle,” he says, “is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, authorities, and powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil” (Ephesians 6:12).

Paul admonishes us to “be strong in the Lord and his mighty power” (Eph 6:10). How does one become strong? How can one overcome temptation? How can one combat Satan and his relentless pursuit to destroy a life? The answer is, “We must prepare ourselves for battle, because spiritual battles will come. God offers hope for the hopeless and help when we feel helpless. (Part 3 coming tomorrow).
