“Small & Weak, but Mighty” (Profile)*:
Most of us want to know God’s plan for our lives, but we’re not always sure how to find it. One common misunderstanding is the idea that God’s guidance will come to us out of the blue, that it has nothing to do with what we’re doing now. But if we’re always looking around for God’s next assignment, we run the risk of ruining whatever we’re working on right now.
Gideon’s challenge was to obtain food for his family even though hostile invaders were making the growing, gathering, and preparation of the food almost impossible. In hiding, Gideon was working on his threshing floor when God sent him a messenger with a challenge. Because of the Israelites consistent disobedience and acts of evil, the Lord allowed the Midianites and other eastern peoples to invade their country. Israel lost their crops, livestock, and were in constant danger of their oppressors. Finally, Israel called for God’s help and mercy … and He heard their cry.
The Lord chose Gideon who was in his own mind, the most unlikely individual in the whole nation. He was from the smallest tribe, the weakest in his family, and had no leadership ability or experience. Yet God said, “I want you!” The enemies of Israel were so vast, it was impossible to count their men and camels. The Lord’s angel said to Gideoen, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior” (Judges 6:12). “Go in the strength you have and save Israel … I will be with you!” (vs 14-16).
Gideon, a man unqualified, inexperienced, and apparently small in stature not only became God’s mighty warrior and defeated Israel’s enemies even though severely outnumbered is an example of what God can do in a person’s life when that life is surrendered to Him.
When willing to use our limited power and resources to do His will, God will not only be with us, but will strengthen us with His power, wisdom, and guidance. Don’t sell yourself short – you just might be God’s next “mighty warrior!”
