“A Daily Habit”
Most of us have an agenda for what we want to accomplish today and even make plans for tomorrow or schedule something to do later in the week. A habit is that which has become natural. We do it without even thinking about it because we’ve done it so many times it’s now routine. Do you have a routine when it comes to your spiritual life? Attending a weekend church service is an example and while our desire should be going for the interest of worshipping God and fellowshipping with other believers, it’s a great habit to have.
It's nice to hear individuals speak about their worship experience being as important as going to work Monday morning. A response might be, “I’ll be happy to join you, but it will have to be after church Sunday morning” (or you may attend a church with multiple services). God commands us to “Honor the Sabbath Day and keep it holy.” There are people today who share their faith with others, but don’t attend a house of worship on a regular basis. Over the years, I’ve likened this to a marriage where we claim to love our spouse but refuse to live with them. If we truly love God, why wouldn’t we want to go to His House and join our brothers and sisters in Christ?
Attending a weekend service for the believer should be a habit. Peter gives us a responsibility to work until it becomes a daily habit. This habit is to become a lifestyle. A lifestyle is the things we do because it’s who we are. He says, “Get your minds ready for action, being self-disciplined, and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ” (I Peter 1:13).
Many of us are busy but not engaged. We go through the motions and do what we have to do on our jobs and then go home to wait until the next day’s demands. To often a spouse is taken for granted, time isn’t spent with children, and it’s easier to live reactive lives instead of active lives. More than ever, the world needs men and women who are awake, alive, and engaged. Are you living or existing? Perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate what we do on a daily or weekly basis. Are we disengaged on many levels because we’ve disconnected ourselves with God? That can change today.
