"You Don't Have to be Like Mike" - Monday August 4, 2025

“You Don’t Have to be Like Mike”

In the past there were several television commercials showing the athleticism of Michael Jordan under the watchful eyes of young boys. For an aspiring young athlete, “Who wouldn’t want to be like Mike?”  The reality is, there is only one and will be only one Michael Jordan. There’s no one like him, nor will there ever be. Every person should take heart though because there’s NO ONE LIKE YOU!!

This is the mastery, proficiency, or power (I have no descriptive words) of God! With the number closing in on eight billion people in the world – there are no two people alike. Even identical twins, while they look alike, they have identifiable differences. You’ve heard it said a number of times before – “You are a designer’s model.”  The Psalmist put it this way, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (139:13,14).

You may not shoot a basketball like Michael, throw a football like Tom Brady, hit a tee shot like Tiger, or sing like your favorite singer. But that’s okay. You are YOU and when you accept becoming the best person you can be, that’s good enough! You are priceless in the eyes of your Creator who says, “You are the apple of my eye!”

We all can learn from others but be careful and aware of the lessons they are teaching. You are the only person accountable for your life and actions.  Be strong and vigilant. Don’t let anyone steal your smile, goodwill, self-worth, or confidence. You have been gifted with abilities and talents. Do the things that come natural for you. Allow the Lord to guide your steps and give you discernment.

You might not make the headlines of a newspaper, but making wise decisions and doing the right things will influence your peers. Don’t be swayed by those wanting to lure you away from good and Godly things. Stand strong! It’s not only okay, but right to say NO when necessary. You just may surprise yourself when others decide they want to be like you.
